What an FSC does
A Family Service Centre is staffed by social workers and counsellors. They work with families through the messy stuff that doesn't fit a single scheme. Marital problems. Child behaviour. A relative with mental illness. Mounting debt. Loss of a parent. Domestic violence (with separate specialist help available alongside).
There are 46 FSCs around Singapore. They're free. They're confidential. You don't need a referral to walk in.
Who an FSC is for
Most people don't go to an FSC because they want to. They go because someone (a teacher, a doctor, a neighbour, an SSO officer) said they should.
You should consider an FSC if:
- Things at home feel out of control.
- You're worried about your child or teenager.
- You're caring for someone with mental illness or addiction and don't know what to do.
- You're juggling debt and bills and the calls won't stop.
- You're feeling stuck and think someone outside the family should hear it.
What happens at the first visit
The first conversation is just to understand what's going on. A social worker will sit with you for around an hour. They'll ask about the family, what you're worried about, what you've already tried, and what kind of help you think might work.
From there they'll either:
- Take you on as a longer-term case (regular sessions, working through things over weeks or months).
- Refer you to a specialist agency (mental health services, debt counselling, domestic violence support).
- Help you with one specific thing and close the case.
You're not signing up for a programme. You're starting a conversation.
FSC vs SSO
If you came here looking for cash, you might be in the wrong place. SSOs do the financial side; FSCs do the family side.
Plenty of people go to both. The SSO sorts out the bills while the FSC works on what's underneath the bills. More on SSOs here.
What to bring
Just yourself. An IC if you have it. The names of anyone else in the household who might be part of the conversation.
You don't need documents to walk in. The first session is about listening.
Common worries
"Will they take my children away?" No. FSC social workers are different from MSF child protection. They work with the family, not against it. The only situation they'd escalate is direct danger to a child, and even then their first job is to support, not separate.
"Will my employer find out?" No. Sessions are confidential.
"Will it cost me?" No. FSCs are funded by MSF and stay free.
"What if I just want one piece of advice?" That's fine. You don't have to commit to a long programme.
"What if it's an emergency — violence at home right now?" Call the National Anti-Violence and Sexual Harassment Helpline on 1800 777 0000. They're available 24/7 and can arrange immediate shelter.
