What this is
The Social Service Office is where most government cash help in Singapore starts. ComCare assistance (interim, short-to-medium, and long-term), school fee waivers, utility rebates, and emergency support are all assessed and approved at an SSO. There are 22 offices across the island; each one covers a few postal districts.
You walk in. A social service officer sits with you for about 30 to 45 minutes. They ask about your household, income, and what's gone wrong. Where they can sign you up on the spot, they do. For longer-term schemes or anything that needs casework, they refer you to a Family Service Centre or another specialist agency.
Who should walk in
You should walk in if any of these sounds like you:
- Household income under about $2,500 a month, or under $800 per person.
- You just lost work and savings won't cover the next month or two.
- Someone in the family fell sick and the breadwinner has changed.
- You can't pay this month's rent, electricity, or school fees.
- You're a senior with no working children supporting you.
You don't need to be at the very bottom — ComCare is designed for working families who hit a bad patch.
What to bring
- Your IC (NRIC).
- The most recent bank statement for everyone in the household.
- Anything that shows income — payslip, employer letter, or a no-income declaration if you're not working.
Don't hold off because you don't have everything. Bring what you have; the officer will tell you what else they need.
